The visit to Ataturk Arboretum

We went to Ataturk Arboretum last week. Here, I will be posting my notes about this secret botanic garden in Istanbul.

Atatürk Arboretum is one of the top on my list to take the kids for a sightsee. This place is giving you a breath break by the magnificent flora, ponds and little pathways around as we all live in a massy and rushy life in İstanbul. The ducks, swans, little turtles, water lilies, trees and bushes are enchanting your eyes.  Also as you are walking around you will notice different flora than grows other than Turkey's climate....A total different world than the gardens in Istanbul and elsewhere in Turkey!!

What is an arboretum and why Atatürk Arboretum was sited at Belgrad Forest?

An arboretum is a botanical garden containing living collections of woody plants intended at least partly for scientific study. So this Atatürk Arboretum is aiming to give information for studies of university students and for public of the other climates' floras around the world other than Turkey's. Belgrad Forests is very famous because of its rich variety of flora that botanists are very attracted to observe.

As you walk into the garden this place will look familiar to you. Yes, the tv series and popular music videos are being recorded here. (ex. One of the scenes of "Muhteşem Yüzyıl" serie, that I watched last week, has been taped where the tall trees are laying at both sides of the long road.) I mean, this place is a very popular place with the very famous tv programmes of Turkey!

We walked towards to the pathway at our right side, after a while we found an old fashioned fire watchtower. (I learnt that this tower had been a record location for the movie series called "Keloğlan") During our tour we had the chance to see different flowers, trees, bushes and  small ponds at different points of the garden.

Of course, at this wonderful garden there are some prohibitons in order to protect the nature. Such as, no bicycle, no scooter, no cafes or restaurants around, no pickniking, no barbecue time with family.

Yes, what can you do in this lovely nature?

Take pictures of the flora, animals, your families, your friends. You can bring your own cold sandwiches and drinks and eat at a bench. You can walk alot, feed the animals, and learn and teach about the nature, enjoy the rich oxygenated air. Your children can run here very freely, as there are no traffic sources such as bikes, scooters...You will fancy this place especially with children while you tape their videos in this very peaceful atmosphere.

Transportation

By metro: Hop off at "Hacıosman" station and take the bus #42HM to Bahçeköy. Then have a walk of 500 metres towards Kemerburgaz road.
By private vehicle: Follow the E-5 highway from Beşiktaş to Sarıyer, then turn to Bahçeköy. As you arrive to Istanbul University's Forestry Faculty, turn to left towards Kemerburgaz way. After 500 metres you will see the Atatürk Arboretum on your left side.

Zoo in Istanbul

Istanbul had a zoo in Gulhane when I was a child. I had the best memories there with my cousins and my grandfather. I remember how we fed the giraffes with the barks of trees. In 1991, the zoo in Gulhane had been shut down because of the many complains of the living conditions of animals. (Yeah it became terrible I remember that also :(((  ) In 1993 Faruk Yalcın, the founder of Faruk Yalcın Zoo who was known as a constructor of NATO, started a bird sanctuary in Darica to conserve the species which are endangered. He succeded in wild bird life and saved.  Faruk Yalcın, developed a suitable habitat for the birds to live in a natural environment. This forming advanced the sanctuary to a botanical garden as well. By 1995, the establishment generated a tropical area and started activity on adding wild life animals to the zoo. ring taled coatis Nowadays the zoo has a mission for conserving the animal species from Anatolia which are endangered.
